Learn how to make comics with OCAF!

Comic creating is too often done in isolation, so a foundational goal of OCAF is to support creators of all ages and backgrounds who want to hone their craft. We work with schools, libraries, and everyone who would like to learn more about reading and making comics. Some of our programs include:

Make Your own Comic Strip

Participants will learn the process of creating a comic strip with characters, story ideas, and layouts. Been a longtime fan of favorites like Peanuts, Garfield, and Calvin & Hobbes? Now you can make your own! Recommended age group: All Ages: 5+

Make a Comic Book Character

We all love comic book characters from Superman to Dog Man. Now kids can learn to make their own characters and practice sketching them to put them into stories. All Ages: 5+

How to Make a Monster!

A workshop on how to “How to Make a Monster!” An informative workshop that examines the history and technique of creature creation and gives learners a means to apply what they have learned! Recommended age group: Teens and Adult: 12+

Drawing Dynamic Anatomy

A workshop on how to Draw and render “Dynamic Anatomy” as influenced by Masters such as Burne Hogarth, Time Sale, Jack Kirby, Mark Silvestri and more! An informative workshop that examines the history, technique and gives learners a means to apply what they have learned! Recommended age group: Teens and Adult: 12+

Turn Your Idea into a Comic

Have an idea for a comic, but not sure where to start? This program will show the steps of designing characters, writing scripts with strong beats, and laying out pages, everything you need to know to get your comic started. Recommended age group: Teens: 12-18

Comic Book Intensive

Everyone can create a comic book from the ground up. Learn the aspects of storytelling, layouts, and art that will take you from a blank page to a completed comic book. Recommended age group: Teens and Adult: 12+

Turning Your Memoir into a Graphic Novel

Sequential art is one of the best ways to capture a biography. It allows for eye-catching portrayals of moments, smooth transitions in time, and narration without boggy exposition. Participants will learn how to turn their own stories into comic formats. Recommended age group: Teens and Adult: 12+

How to Critique a Comic

There’s been a stigma on comics for 90 years as being “just for kids,” yet they have brought about some of the most inspirational figures like Superman and Life from Shencomix and powerful stories from Maus to The Best We Could Do. This program will show how to analyze a comic to prove they are a medium as powerful as prose and film. Recommended age group: Teens and Adult: 12+

A Brief History of Manga

Professor and executive director of the Oklahoma Comic Arts Foundation Jeff Provine will lead a discussion to show the history of Japanese comics from fine art beginnings to the dominant comics art form worldwide today. Recommended age group: Teens and Adult: 12+

Ink & Draw Oklahoma

Free and all ages comic creator meetups hosted by the Oklahoma Comic Arts Foundation. Ongoing throughout Oklahoma since 2016, when it was founded by Tony Thunder and Charles J. Martin as a safe space for illustrators and writers to talk craft, trade tips, and root for the next great project to be created in our state.
